In an Interview magazine’s latest cover story, Rihanna opened up about her friendship with A$AP Rocky before they started dating.

The duo first met while working together on a new version of Rihanna’s 2012 song “Cockiness (Love It)” and even performed it at the MTV Video Music Awards. They also appeared together in A$AP’s music video for “Fashion Killa” the next year. Though they didn’t become a couple until the end of 2019, they had a strong bond from the start.

“We saw fashion the same. We saw creative the same. We ended up in the same circles a lot,” said Rihanna.  As they grew up, they supported each other by wearing each other’s clothing lines and showing up at each other’s events.

Being around each other a lot, they learned how the other person thought about love before they decided to date. “I’ve seen him in relationships. He’s seen me in relationships. We’ve seen each other outside of relationships,” Rihanna explained.

“We understood what we could offer and the potential problems we could cause in each other’s lives. We knew we could either really hurt or really support each other. So, we were very careful when we started dating,” said Rihanna.

She added, “We knew what we’re capable of, and the trouble that we could bring to each other’s lives. We can make or break each other’s hearts. And so, we started dating with a lot of caution.”

She let love blossom naturally

The Grammy-winning artist, shared, “I just let whatever was supposed to happen, happen. It was just, ‘This is a flower. It’s either going to die or blossom. But I’m going to let it decide itself.’”

She and A$AP Rocky, 35, made their relationship public in November 2020 and have since had two sons together: RZA, who’s almost 2 years old, and Riot, who’s 8 months old.

Rihanna also mentioned that the COVID pandemic actually brought them closer faster, which she believes was meant to be, especially since they were about to start a family.

“COVID sped up our relationship, which I felt like God knew we needed because we were going to start a family,” she told Interview magazine.

Rihanna opened up about how letting go and trusting the flow of life brought her and A$AP Rocky closer, especially during the pandemic. “It was the best thing that ever happened to us. It just happened,” she reflected.

She mentioned how different this was from her past efforts in relationships, like with Hassan Jameel, where no matter how hard she tried, something seemed off. “I’ve learned to just let go and let God guide the way. It makes a world of difference when someone really sees you for who you are,” Rihanna shared.

The support and belief A$AP Rocky has in her, seeing her as the mother of his children, has been a game-changer. “So when someone sees you completely and believes in you, and thinks you’re worthy of being the mother of their kids, it’s a great feeling.”

She added, “I felt the same about him. I knew he would be a great dad,” making it all about faith, trust, and a bit of pandemic timing.
