Snow Returns to Asia’s Highest Ski Resort: What Awaits Visitors

After a slow start, the highest ski resort in Asia, Gulmarg, is now covered in snow again. This is great news for people who love skiing and snowboarding.

Earlier in January, there wasn’t enough snow in Gulmarg. Many people were disappointed because they couldn’t ski. Experts blamed the lack of snow on dry weather and climate change.

Originally known as the “meadow of flowers,” Gulmarg was already a popular spot in the summer. But in 1927, it became even more special when it was turned into a ski club by the British Raj, the rulers of India from 1858 to 1947.

Today, people visiting Asia’s highest ski resort can enjoy a whopping 1,330 meters (4,363 feet) of skiing area. There are lifts that take you to four different skiing zones on Mount Apharwat. And the best part? The Gulmarg Gondola. It’s one of the highest gondolas in the world, taking you up to 3,980 meters (13,057 feet).

Gulmarg is located approximately 50 kilometers away from Srinagar, the largest city in Indian-administered Kashmir, and about 20 kilometers from the Line of Control.

Brian Newman, a snow-safety officer from Colorado who knows Kashmiri, has spent many winters in Gulmarg. He says Gulmarg is really special because you can’t find mountains like these anywhere else.

He and his team work hard to make sure the slopes are safe from avalanches, so visitors can have a great time without worrying.

Luckily, Gulmarg has finally got some snow again. This is perfect timing because it’s about to host ski and snowboard events for the Khelo India National Winter Games 2024, starting on February 21.

Gulmarg isn’t just for serious athletes – it’s a place for everyone who loves skiing and snowboarding to have a fantastic time.

When it comes to experiencing the local ski culture in Gulmarg, visitors should be prepared for a different vibe compared to the slopes of Europe or North America, advises Newman.

He emphasizes that while Gulmarg caters to adventurous skiers familiar with challenging terrains, it diverges from the typical Western ski village due to government regulations.

“Guests have to seek out comprehensive services for families and kids, and alcohol is not freely available so après ski activities, typical in the West, are non-existent. But visitors come here for the cultural experience which is worthwhile and memorable.”

Nonetheless, whether you’re an expert skier or just want to try it out for fun, Gulmarg offers an unforgettable winter experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
